I’m already doing lots of things. Why should I now practice Yoga?
For most people, the primary goal is to achieve a healthy physique and body. In other words, Yoga helps you keep fit. Even if you’re not that interested in the philosophical elements of Yoga, it is still a good workout. Regular practice will tone your muscles, exercise your spine and helps you develop suppleness. It leads to a better awareness of your body.
If you are someone who spends a lot of time at a desk, Yoga will do you good and will improve back pain and stiffness.
OMG- I’m not flexible enough to do Yoga! What can I do?
People sometimes say they can’t do Yoga because they’re not flexible enough. This is crazy for the following reasons:
First of all… if you were flexible enough to do Yoga, you probably wouldn’t need to do Yoga. This is fairly obvious.
Secondly, for most people Yoga has to do with just being flexible and with contorting the body into Pretzel shapes. But Yoga asanas (the actual poses) are just the tip of the iceberg (or, in a more yogic sense: they are actually the foundation of the iceberg). There is a lot more to Yoga than stretching and breathing. And none of it has anything to do with being flexible.
But thirdly, and most importantly, it speaks volumes of the outlook these people have on life. There need to be results or learning outcomes. The journey of learning (or becoming more flexible just for the sake of becoming more flexible) seems important to them. But making mistakes is far from being unimportant or without value. This is what Yoga is actually all about. It’s about the practice. It’s not about results. That is its beauty and its gift. If you’re not flexible yet, you will be soon. And if you’re not, it doesn’t matter.
Who can practice Yoga?
“Yoga is possible for anybody who really wants it. Yoga is universal…”
(Sri K. Pattabhi Jois)
Everybody can practice Yoga. It is non competitive and age, your fitness or your state of health is not an obstacle. You practice according to your own ability. It is up to you how you want to challenge yourself and where it will lead you. You can practice everywhere. All you need is a mat.
Yoga is very beneficial for both men and women. You will develop flexibility while gaining strength at the same time.
